Description
Yorkshire Grit Woodturners Abrasive Pastes produce a superiorly smooth surface on your wood, resin, and hybrid projects. The abrasive pastes contain mineral oil, beeswax, and abrasive powders without using petroleum products or other strong-smelling harmful chemicals. The result is an easy-to-apply smooth paste that acts like “liquid sandpaper.” The abrasive paste reduces the scratches left behind by courser grit dry sanding. It eliminates fine dust produced by higher-grit sanding.
How To Use Yorkshire Grit Abrasive Pastes:
Yorkshire Grit Original: On Wood
- 1. Sand to at least 240 grit. We recommend our INDASA premium sandpaper. Ensure you have removed all tool and radial marks left by previous sanding grits. (higher than 400 grit is not necessary)
- 2. Apply your preferred sanding sealer and leave it to cure. Once cured and de-nibbed according to the sanding sealer directions, proceed.
- 3. With the lathe off, use a paper towel to apply a small amount of paste to the workpiece working it into the grain until uniform coverage is achieved.
- 4. Start the lathe slowly (approximately 500 rpm or less). Work the paste into the wood using the same applicator towel for a minute or two. The paste acts as liquid sandpaper, and you will feel it cutting in as such. As you work the paste, it will continue to process at an increasingly finer mesh.
- 5. Once satisfied with the smoothness of the finish, use a clean paper towel and move across the workpiece with moderate pressure while increasing lathe rpm until the residue stops showing on the towel. 6. For final appearance and use, apply your favorite finish.
Yorkshire Grit Microfine: On Resin – Hybrid Projects – Wood
- 1. Best results are achieved using Original Yorkshire Grit before Microfine Yorkshire Grit. If this is not possible, sand to at least 600 grit. We recommend our INDASA premium sandpaper.
- Ensure you have an even surface free of all tool marks and radial marks left by previous sanding grits.
- 2. If you use Microfine Yorkshire Grit on the wood directly after dry sanding (not using Original Yorkshire Grit first), apply a thin sanding sealer.
Using the same applicator towel, work the paste into the workpiece for a minute or two. The paste acts as liquid sandpaper. Depending on the material you are abrading, you may need to add additional paste on the applicator towel until the desired finish is achieved.
- 5. Once satisfied with the smoothness of the finish, use a clean paper towel and move across the workpiece with moderate pressure while increasing lathe rpm until the residue stops showing on the towel.
- 6. For Resin and Hybrid pieces, if you aim for a clear glass finish, you are now ready for buffing. For Wood pieces, apply your favorite finish for your final appearance and use. Care should be taken to remove all Microfine residue before using any lacquer-based finishes.
