Friday 12:30 Turning your first bowl

Learning bowl turning on the lathe is often the next step once you are comfortable turning small items such as pens and bottle stoppers. In this seminar, you will learn the fundamentals of making your fist bowl, including proper wood selection, blank mounting, and tool selection choices. There are few things in woodturning as rewarding as turning that first bowl. If you are fairly new to woodturning, this seminar is also a great way to connect with a local turning club in your area. Woodturning clubs are a wonderful means by which to learn and expand your turning skills.

2:30. Wood Stabilizing &  Resin Casting

 Bradley McCalister will unlock the mystery of wood stabilizing and resin casting and share it with you. Learn to cast your turning blanks from a combination of resins and woods. The topics covered will include preparation for casting wood with resin and vacuum stabilization, molds for your castings, available resin options, and the addition of colorants. He will demonstrate removing air bubbles from your casting with the use of a pressure chamber or “pot” to ensure a perfect cast. This seminar is followed up on Saturday at 1:30 in “Turning  stabilized wood and resin blanks.” Be sure to attend both seminars and head for your shop ready to cast and turn in fantastic resins!

4:30   Mini Hollow forms with mini hollowing tools

This seminar will provide the hollow form turning techniques and methods that Bradley uses to create his unique and beautiful small hollow forms. Bradley will explain and demonstrate the methods used to produce a small, thin-wall hollow form using only mini hand-held hollowing tools. The demonstration will include the use of straight and various sizes of curved tools. Wood selection and design considerations will be discussed and demonstrated throughout the seminar.

 Bradley McCalister has spent over a decade with The Woodworking Shows teaching and demonstrating woodturning. In this quiet, pre-show seminar, he will share with you the fundamental woodturning techniques he has learned and developed. You will learn to quickly and efficiently start with green wood or dried, turning blanks to produce a dazzling array of turned wood in many shapes, sizes, and finishes. The seminar begins by providing you with the necessary safety precautions for woodturning, an introduction to the lathe, and how to select the best lathe for your needs. 11:30 Guest Regional Turner

At each woodworking show, Bradley McCalister invites a guest turner from the area to share his stage. The guest turner demonstrates a project of their choice and learns what it is like to be on the stage, under the lights, and in front of the camera. The audience receives a wonderful, educational presentation and helps another turner to grow and expand their skills. Over the years, some of Bradley’s guest demonstrators have gained national exposure at subsequent turning events. Who knows, next year you could be up on the stage.
